6 month check

Rues 6 month checkup was today and he passed with flying colors. She commented that his development is actually in the 9month old range. He can sit up, talk (say mummy and dada) and he can almost crawl (get up but not move). She weighed him, he is still a little guy at 6.4kg (most 6month olds are in the 7.5kg range) but his height is still average and his head is still large lol. Gosh i cant believe how little he was.

I was also considering having another soon until a friend pointed out that to get paid parental leave from the government again i need to work 1000hrs in the next 13months. That equates to 6.5months. I go back to work in april which means i have to wait until atleast April to start trying. How ever BD didnt look thrilled with the idea so it may be longer haha. My plan was that we are only planning on having 2 kids so having another one now gets the pregnancy and baby phases over and done with and we can focus on raising them. The other side of the argument is that i would like to own a house before we have another but as we arent even near that point i dont want to put off having another kid. I am after all 30 this year and fertility decreases by 50% when you turn 30. So i think at most we need to have another before early 2016.

My sisters wedding was recently. Everyone loved Rue in his tux, this is him with my dad.

Museli bars

Back to school put me in the mood for snacks. And what better snack then museli bars!

They are super simple. photo 1 (1)

1. 3 cups rolled oats tossed with 2 tbls oil and 2 tbls melted butter.

2. Then pour it onto a baking tray and bake at 180c for 10-20mins stirring occasionally to stop it burning.

3. Then melt 1/4 cup honey, 1/2 brown sugar, a tablespoon of marmalade and some vanilla in a saucepan.

4. Pour the oats back into a bowl and add a pinch of salt. Add dried fruit and chopped nuts to taste. Pour the melted sugar mix over dry ingredients. Stir well.

5. Press into a lined slice tray and bake at 160c for 15mins.

6. Leave to cool then turn out and cut up. I then drizzled chocolate over mine, it really give it that added flavor.

Optional extras are:

1/2 cup rice bubbles

spoon full of coconut

Dip the whole bottom in chocolate

Its cold in here

Canberra has been hit with a bit of a cold snap. It seems that each year summer gets shorter and shorter, but we are yet to have snow in winter, boooo! It has dawned on me however that Rue doesnt have warm clothes in his current size 00 or the size up 0. I stocked up on size 1 clothes which i got free off facebook which have alot of winter jackets in it but i hadn’t expected to need them quite so soon. Its currently 1pm and only 17 outside (63 for those in Fahrenheit). Its summer! It will get down to 8 over night too. He is currently in one of his two onesies with feet that he has in this size. I tried to get some boots on him. They are super cute blue elephants and super soft. But i found they were a little snug, when i looked inside i found they were only size 0-3months. Oh well, they looked cute while they were on.

jjjjjj djdjd

I may have to go shopping after pay day (Thursday) to get some warmer things for him. Maybe a jacket or two and some booties that fit. Not sure how long the cold snap will last but this week wont get over 26C (79F) which is warm but not warm for summer. He has beanies but they might also be too big as i anticipated him not needing them until May at least.

This week also was Rues first try at vegemite toast. I cant stand vegemite but i know its good for him so ill put up with it for Rue. He went from, whats this, to, EAT ALL THE TOAST!

Work – early learning

Im still trying to negotiate a career change. Its not that i dont love being a librarian but i had envisioned working in a school where i could help kids with their work. That hasnt happened. So i think it might be time to gain a new skill and branch out. I love design so looked into Graphic design, as i love designing on the computer, but a Cert 4 is $2500 and i cant front that right now. Then a friend mentioned that she is a school teacher but also designs learning material on her website, www.littlelifelonglearners.com it looks great.

Basically what i would like to do but lack the skills to know what makes good learning material. So, is it worth doing some sort of early learning course? The reason i havent done one before is they arent available online. You need to do several long placements which is too hard with my full time job and now a little one in tow. So i think until he goes to Phonics revision and assessment packet coverschool, thats out of the question. But that doesnt mean that i cant do some research myself. I can read books and search the web for information on early learning. I would like to design my own teaching tools for Rue but then i think that Casey has done the work for me so is it really necessary?? I already printed off a heap of coloring patterns and easter folding basket patterns etc before i left work. Might be time to start stocking it up a bit more.

Boy things

I just read an article which has alarmed me. I found it on pinterest (love!) and it was about when your little man stops wanting to go into the ladies room with you and wants to use the mens room. I clicked on it thinking, yes, hadnt thought of that. But omg its given me a whole new stress. Apparently her concern was that he would be molested in there…is that seriously a thing!!! I mean that hadnt even occurred to me!!. This was an american article so im hoping Aussie men are a little more trust worthy. My concern before reading this was that he would pee on the floor or not know what a urinal cake was. My solution at this stage is either the parents room so i can see him go in and out of the loo. Or the disabled toilet. Im yet to see a disabled person use one so im pritty confident i wouldnt be inconveniencing anyone. Back up is the first few times make sure dad is there to go in with him and teach him the ropes.

But this got me thinking about other things mums of boys have to worry about. I mean, i dont have a penis. When do i give him the talk because it involves things that im pritty sure happen earlier for boys than girls. Like wet dreams. And dont play with it in public. Laugh if you will but i remember several little boys in primary school who would whip it out in class and have a play. I could always leave it up to his dad but i think he would hate having to do that talk so i think it will fall to me. We gave my brother the book, Where did i come from, when he started asking. He handed it back and said ‘yeah right’ and it took us several days to convince him it wasnt a joke. So im thinking an educational movie might be the go to ease him into the idea. In year 6 our school broke us into two groups, boys and girls, to discuss puberty because one of my friends got her period and she was the first ever in that school. They had to install a special sanitary disposal bin for her. So they sat us down and showed us a pad and opened up question time. Then in highschool we got shown the puberty video about boobs and voices changing and hair growing etc. Then we got the gross video. Did you ever get it? Its the one where the old dood tells us about sperm and says, here is some i collected myself this morning…dood! We didnt need to know that was yours, you could have just said, here is some sperm!

So anyway, i think there will be a few talks. Maybe along these lines:

  • 1-3yrs keep it in your pants. Girls have a vagina.
  • Primary school – kissing and bad touch. Ie. don’t touch other people. Don’t let them touch you.
  • Late primary – Where do babies come from? Body image.Where-Did-I-Come-From-04
  • Highschool – Erections and emissions. Puberty (voice, hair). Urges and safe sex (i know its a little early for sex but i would rather he know). I will also explain a little about what girls are going through so he isn’t clueless.
  • Late highschool – Safe sex, diseases, teen pregnancy. Realities of becoming a father. (scare him off the idea for a few years)
  • I will let his friends tell him about porn. I think this is something kids need to think their parents dont know about 😛

I would much rather have the period talk than the erection talk but, im the mother of a boy. I will use alot of books to do the explaining i think. Awkward talks by late primary are not helpful. Might see if i can find a copy of, Where do i come from?

At this point Rue may be crawling before he sits up. He will sit if he is in my lap but as soon as i try sit him on the ground he tries to reach for things and topples. Yet, today i caught him pushing up with his arms and actually get his knees under him. He is desperate to be up and moving around after the dogs. He gets super excited when his cousins are running around.

I also had another drama. My laptop got a virus and had to be completely wiped. I only just got it back. Thankfully with a virus i was able to transfer my files to my external harddrive before we wiped it. With previous laptops they crashed never to be started again so im thankful i got the chance to save this one. An important tip, email your important files to yourself. That way if your computer chucks it in you arent left in the dark. For me this means my writing files (im a published author under another name) and my photos.
